History

Joseph Pilates developed the Pilates Method of exercise in the 1920’s. It was first used to rehabilitate prisoners of war whose weakened state made it impossible for them to begin a "normal" exercise regimen. Later it was discovered that Pilates was a tremendous benefit to people looking for a higher level of fitness. Devoted students of Joseph Pilates kept this artwork of exercise alive as the years went by. It has been fairly recent that Pilates has really escalated in the number of people who use this exercise technique.

How It Works

The foundation of Pilates is core strength. The deep, internal muscles of the back and abdomen are known as the core muscles. When these muscles are strong and doing what they were meant to do, the way they are taught to do in Pilates, they will work together with the superficial muscles to support the spine and movement. This in turn helps to improve someone’s posture.

As the core strength develops there will be an increase of stability in trunk position of the body as a whole. It becomes properly stabilized, relieving pressure on the back. This allows the body to move more fluidly.

Posture

People may not initially take Pilates to improve their posture nevertheless it will be a wonderful "side effect". A great deal of people will take Pilates to help with back pain and Pilates will work wonderfully at helping this pain by improving the core strength. What they do not realize is that it is bad posture which is causing the pain in the first place. As the posture improves so does the back pain.

This doesn’t just hold true to back pain. Better posture will decrease pain in the shoulders, neck, hips, and knees. Along with better posture comes ease of movement. People with good posture find it easier to perform daily living such as walking, sitting at the computer, standing, walking up stairs, and better at sports. They are less likely to get injured.

Their mental and emotional health will improve since they have a better opinion of themselves. They sit straighter and stand straighter and look better. Which leads to better thinking about themselves. Better posture leads to better emotional , physical and mental health.
